What kind of beef to use?
For stir frying, tender beef cuts such as sirloin, ribeye, tri tip, top loin, tenderloin, and flat iron all work very well. Just make sure to cut the beef in to strips or smaller and equal sizes for even cooking!
In this recipe, I used ribeye this round (as pictured), but I do switch it up occasionally, so you may want to try all different types and see what is your favorite!
What kind of onion to use?
I recommend using white onions for this dish. This is because they are crunchy and have a sharper taste and so are great for stir fries.
If you don't have any white onions, you can also use sweet onion or yellow onion. Sweet onions are good for frying, but will also provide extra tastiness. While, yellow onions pretty much always good for any type of cooking all around.
How to make Beef and Onion Stir Fry
First gather the ingredients:
- 1 lb beef, sliced (I used ribeye)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 medium onion (I used white, but you can use yellow or sweet onion also)
- Salt as desired
Slice the beef and the onions.
Then, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, cornstarch, salt, and sugar in a large bowl or zip lock bag. If you are about to cook it, let it marinade at the very least 15-30 minutes. If you are making this ahead, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes before cooking.
In a large nonstick skillet, add 1 tbsp of oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef, and stir fry until mostly browned, and then add the sliced onions. Stir fry for about 4 minutes or until onions soften. Give it a taste, and if you prefer to add more salt, do so now and mix well.
